OPD and Sightsavers launched the Equal Bangladesh campaign
Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and Sightsavers officially launched the Equal Bangladesh Campaign on May 11, 2023 at a landmark event held at Hotel Amari, Dhaka. The inauguration ceremony was held in the honorable presence of Md. Ashraf Ali Khan Khosrow, State Minister for Social Welfare of Bangladesh.
The Equal Bangladesh Campaign is a coalition of more than twenty organizations campaigning and trying to influence policymakers to take action to protect and improve the rights of people with disabilities, ensuring their equal opportunities and access to resources, employment and government services through effective means. Implementation of Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities (RPPD) Act 2013 and National Action Plan (NAP) on Disability. It is headed by a steering committee of elected OPD members and forms the Sightsavers Bangladesh Promotion Secretariat. The twenty organizations in the campaign include the National Council of Disabled Women, the National Grassroots Disabilities Organization, the Center for Disability in Development, UNDP, the Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh, the Disabled Child Foundation, the Center for Services and Information on Disability, Pratibandhi Shishu Foundation.
The launch event witnessed a diverse audience including representatives of government agencies, civil society organizations, disability rights activists, and persons with disabilities. Participants participated in panel discussions, engaging presentations, and inspiring stories that highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Bangladesh and the steps required to address them effectively. Md Nurul Amin, NDC, Head (Additional Secretary), General Economics Department, Planning Commission, Md Jehsan Islam, Joint Secretary Ministry of Social Welfare, and Jasmine Nahar, Director National Disability Development Foundation (JPUF) were present. special guest
The chief guest of the event Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khosru, State Minister for Social Welfare, spoke on the occasion, expressed support for the campaign, and emphasized the government's commitment to realizing the rights of the disabled. He appreciated the collaborative efforts of OPD and Sightsavers led by the Equal Bangladesh campaign and highlighted the importance of collective action to bring lasting change.
Throughout the launch event, distinguished speakers from both OPD and Sightsavers shared their insights, experiences, and expertise in advocating for disability rights and equality. Among others, Sitesavers Bangladesh Country Director Amrita Regina Rosario and Sitesavers Global Head of Campaigns Tessa Murphy, Bardo Executive Director Md Saidul Haque, CSID Executive Director Khandkar Zahurul Alam, CDD Executive Director AHM Noman Khan, etc. spoke. Equal Bangladesh Campaign Steering Committee Chair Nasima Begum said,

The Equal Bangladesh Campaign seeks to collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies and the media, to increase its impact and support the effective implementation of the RPPD Act and NAP on Persons with Disabilities.
United Medical College and Hospital celebrated International Nurses Day
United Medical College and Hospital (UMCH) celebrated International Nurses Day on its premises on Thursday 11 May. The day-long celebration started with a rally attended by nurses, doctors, medical professionals, and administration professionals.
At the celebration, Sunny Akhtar was named Star Nurse and received the award from United Medical College and Hospital Project Director Nizamuddin Hasan Rashid on the occasion of International Nurses Day at United Medical College and Hospital (Satarkul, Dhaka). Among others present were United Group Chief Human Resources Officer Md Naushad Parvez, UMCH doctors, nurses and administrative professionals.
